Wonderful estate sale find! This rounded ovoid jug / handled crock is very old, no doubt about it. Redware with a manganese applied finish that is well aged. The inside has a clear glaze and the outside is dark, rich and the manganese finish is crackled in some places, especially under the lip. The overall patina is fabulous! Has an applied handle. Lip around the top is free of chips. All over crazing inside the jug. The bottom has a black burnt appearance like it may have been used over an open fire in the days long ago. T are no makers marks or slip decoration to help place this piece that I could find... ** Except t is a "2" scratched onto the side (see 3rd pic).** The bottom has some hairline cracks that come up the sides in a couple of places but for the age of this piece it would be expected. Redware can dry out and crack if heated excessively. T is one pit on the side which is about pea sized. Since I listed this last time...I have not had this dated but a friend looked at pics I sent him and with his 35 years of knowledge, he said this looked to be from the early 1900's, maybe late 1800's but wasn't sure of what region it came from. He is familiar with redware and pottery but it's not his area of expertise. It is made exactly in the manner of the very old pieces I have seen for sale at antique shops, auctions and on eBay. read more
