You are bidding on a very rare, beautiful, University of Chicago antique flag/ pennant. We believe that this pennant is from the turn of the century. It could have been a presentation piece from the opening of the University, or could have been a sports flag or pennant to support the football team. This piece is truly unbelievable. It appears to be a double layer of burgundy felt for the background. Onto that the cream felt strips are woven through and tied into bows on the corners. The lettering is also sewn on in cream felt. The best part of this unique piece is the phoenix shield. The shield is made of very soft tan leather. Appliquéd to the shield is the phoenix, which is also made of leather with embossing and embroidering. The flames below the phoenix are embroidered onto the leather. The upper red portion is felt, but the book is leather with painted and leather tooled words. This is a LARGE piece. It measures 23 1⁄2âe x 22âe. The condition of this for the age is very good. T are some small holes in the felt, which could have been pin holes from displaying the piece. The colors are great. T is some very light spotting on the cream letters. Overall, it is in great condition for its age. The banner/ flag was framed and was spray-affixed to the mat. We have tested part of it and we were able to remove it from the mat fairly read more
