This is truly a beautiful item, it is a Civil War era Match Safe, typical of those used by officers or well to do enlisted men. It measures 2 3/4" x 1 3/4" and is silver over brass, with a hinged lid. It has a floral design with an area for engraving. It doesn't appear that it was ever engraved, or if it was, it wore off over the years. Keeping matches dry for the Civil War soldier was a high priority....with candles, campfires, and tobacco, dry matches were needed for everyday functioning. Although not perfect, these match safes helped with the elements. Like I said, this is a beautiful piece and would look great in a display of an officers personal effects. I have kept the reserve low, so take advantage to add it to your Civil War collection or it would make a special Christmas gift. I will also include the glass top display case pictured.
