This is a really rare and unique example of the ambrotype. I could not find a lot of information about the process that made the image. what I did find was in the book: Collector's Guide To Early Photographs Second Edition by O. Henry Mace. On pages 44- 45 is the following information: "In rare cases the ambrotypist might scrape away that portion of the emulsion surrounding the subject and blacken only the area behind the subject. Then, by the application of a white background, the effect of a photograph on milk glass could be produced". The image and case are in great condition. On the velvet material side of the image case the material has lots of wear and a few tears. The initial "I" is in the center.
