Very rare WWI Trench Art Shell Casing "Verdun"-1916. The spectacular utility and creativity in such artwork never ceases to amaze, and this brass mortar shell is no exception. From what I understand, this would be considered "trench art", in the family of "tramp art", primarily identified by usage of "waste" items. The shell is identified on the base with "NYAB 75 DEC 1034L 17 M". The intricate artwork is inside out, with "Verdun" circled by what appears to be tree limbs and a beaded necklace, a flower on the back, and amazing texture work. One of the most critical battles of WWI, The French Battle of Verdun began on 21 February, 1916, and up to 10,000 shells poured into Verdun every hour. The trenches of WWI give the work it's identity. Measures 10" tall by 3 3/8" diameter. Happy to answer questions and please have a look at my other items.
