Very , Very Good Stanley # 15 1/2 Tailed Block Plane The metal parts of the plane are not broken, cracked or repaired and retain about 80 - 90 % of the japanning, maybe more. The lever cap has much more of the japanning than usual. The wood knob has what looks like a lot of the original finish but it does have some of the usual "tool box dings". The throat is fine without the usual chips. This is an early one with lots of patent dates. The throat adjuster has the patent date of Feb.20 ,'94. The lateral lever has the ' 88, '88 and '97 dates on it. The lever cap has the '97 patent date on it and the cutter has the early "arched" logo. The bottom has the "B" casting mark and the lever cap has the same. This is an very fine example of an early Stanley tailed block plane. This is from my collection and a top shelf example. These longer members of the "Excelsior" family are much less common than their shorter ones. I know, some people consider only the earlier planes with the "hump back" as "Excelsior" planes but John Walter in his definitive book on Stanley lumps the whole family and even the later types into his study of "Excelsior planes". You can take that for what it's worth. The longer ones are still much less common. Please ask questions early enough for me to answer them. I will certainly do my best to answer them.
