New - rare postcard hand signed in person by the late Lachhiman Gurung, one of only 13 Gurkhas ever to win the Victoria Cross and one of the toughest soldiers in the history of warfare. Item signed at his London home in July 2009 - Item includes details of the battle in which he won his VC. Havildar Lachhiman Gurung was awarded the Victoria Cross whilst serving in Burma in 1945. His observation post was attacked by hundreds of Japanese soldiers who threw grenades at him which he threw back. The third grenade exploded in his hand badly injuring him - blowing off his fingers, shattering his right arm and wounding him in the face, body and leg. Yet despite his wounds for the next four hours the 4ft 11in Gurung repelled wave after wave of Japanese attackers by loading and firing his rifle with his left hand. From another post he could be heard challenging the Japanese to "Come and fight a Gurkha!". The following morning 31 dead Japanese lay in front of his observation post. In recent years he became a key figure in the campaign to allow Gurkhas to settle in Britain, a fight which led to victory in 2009. Havildar Lachiman Gurung, VC, aged 92, sadly passed away on December 12th, 2010.
