A Very Nice Victorian Burtles Tate & Co. Uranium Glass Swan c.1885 This is a very nice Victorian Opalescent Vaseline (Uranium) glass swan made by Burtles, Tate and Company in Manchester, Northern England during the latter half of the 1880's. The base, which has been ground and polished has the moulded registration mark "20086" which confirms that this swan's design was registered on the 8th of January 1885 by Burtles Tate. In normal daylight the glass is a yellow green colour with a bright "glow" to it. The photo above with the black background was taken in darkness with illumination from an Ultra Violet lamp (Blacklight). The glass gives a positive (approximate) reading of 0.446 mR/hr and 1251 CPM on a Medcom "Inspector" Digital Geiger Counter. If you are not familiar with Vaseline/Uranium glass and would like to know more about what exactly it is, then........... ' Vaseline/ Uranium Glass Explained ' on the popular 1st.Glass website. This swan is in very good condition but it does have a couple of very minor flaws which have occurred during the original manufacturing process...... There is a small thin fillet of extra glass on the base and there are two shallow moulding lines on the outside of the right wing which can only really be seen from the inside of the swan. I have highlighted the lines in the second photo down above. read more
