Victorian Christmas Oil Light Candle, Blue Glass Diamond Quilted. Late 1890sVery difficult to summarize decades of lighting for the tree in this paragraph. First Oil filled glass tumblers with wires, then these same tumblers filled with candles and lit on the tree, then candles (rope candles) wrapped around branches, then thicker candles put on with nail pushed up on branch, then holder with nail bottom, then nail holder with drip tray, and then eventually in 1867, clay ball weighted holders. Then in 1887, a patent was taken out for clip-on holders which could be put at the tips of the branches, and thought to be more safe.This glass tumbler dates to before 1900, and was produced in the United States. We have used these tumblers, put battery lights inside, and lit them in the evening. We have also placed them on the tree, and put in battery lights (ones that flicker and are controlled by a remote control to turn on and off.Blue quilted pattern, with original wire bale.3.50" in height (to top of glass rim), and in very good condition.There is nothing wrong with these early glass Victorian lights. These glass tumblers being listed today are in very good shape. They are vintage, not reproductions. I guarantee that.
