Here's an outstanding victorian era mechanical pencil in what I'll say is all gold filled metal. Right off this piece is marked with a tiny 18 (??) and while the 18 is quite visible the last part is worn away. By enlarging photo 10 this can be seen on the very base of the facet next to the clip. I've acid tested this and got inconclusive results (some very good, others not as good) to the point that I'm only going to call this 18kt gold filled rather than 18k. That said, this is a beautiful mechanical pencil. I would have dated it significantly earlier, but when I examined the works, they appear to be a more modern style and 1890 seems about right. The pencil is 4-9/16" long with a hexagonal barrel and alternating lightly engine turned designs on the facets (photos 6 &7). The end cap (which covers the lead magazine) has strongly decorated medallions on its sides and a Medusa type face (with snakes) at the top. Quite a lovely embossed design. Then there is the snake clip, long and sinuous with a blue oval cabochon on the top of its head and engraved scales on its back. On the whole pencil, only the brass rivets attaching the clip seem to lack gold finish. There is just one insignificant dent on one of the facets. Advancing the .046" lead is accomplished by twisting the lead magazine cap at the end, operating very much like an early read more
