Music for your ears! A lovely pair of hollow gold-filled Victorian era earrings. The little brass dangles make a soft chiming sound against the hollow body of the earring. The French style earwires are soldered to the body of the earring and the soldered areas are very nicely done. No solder showing around the wires. All parts appear to be original with no damage or repairs. Perfect condition!! One earwire is ever so slightly bent but this is not noticable when wearing. Although these earrings are not marked they do appear to be gold-filled as opposed to rolled gold or gold plated. The gold surface is extremely uniform without the signs of wear characteristic of the gilding or plating process of this time period. Gold-filled is a layer of 10Kt or better gold mechanically bonded under heat & pressure to one or more surfaces of supporting base metal, then rolled or drawn to a given thickness. Gold-filled items are considered fine jewelry, not costume. The gold layer will not quickly wear off, as it will in electroplated products. The finished piece of jewelry has a surface layer of gold of the appropriate karatage, which is very thick compared to rolled gold plate or the heaviest electroplate ( = gold plated) material.(Item #10248)Circa: 1885-1920 Composition: Gold-filled Size: Hang 1 1/2 inches long including brass dangle. 3/4 inch read more
