An ornate late Victorian period rose gold plated chain bracelet with a fine and ornate heart padlock clasp c1890. Here's a little history on victorian jewelry and the meaning of some of it's symbols The story behind the gate bracelet is so romantic! When a sweetheart went off to war he would give his true love a heart shaped padlock bracelet that had a tiny key which opened the little padlock. If she accepted it and agreed to wear it the soldier would keep the key. When other suitors saw the bracelet on her wrist they would know she had found true love. The only way the bracelet could be removed was to have the soldier unlock it when he came home from war. Victorian jewelry is as complex in it's symbolism, sentiment and design as the fashion, architecture and decor of the time. Worn as an ornament, a love token or a remembrance, both the costume and fine jewelry of the era not only completed the well-dressed lady's attire but also denoted her position in society, her marital status and her sense of self. Heart padlock bracelets were popular circa 1890-1905. This GORGEOUS ornate victorian bracelet has curb link chain and it measures 6 1/4" by 1/4". The chain has engraved designs and sparkly little green rhinestones. It does look like one of the rhinestones has been replaced. The one in the very middle is a bit smaller and looks to read more
