VICTORIAN EASTLAKE SILVER GILT 1800's CHERUB/FAIRIES REED & BARTON TEA SET (A Midsumer Night's Dream ) Offering in this auction a truly late 1800's piece of American Silver History, in this REED & BARTON (2814) VICTORIAN EASTLAKE TEA/SET, each piece is backstamped -MFD & PLATED BY REED & BARTON 2814 PATTENT APPLIED FOR GILT- Gilding is the art of applying metal leaf (most commonly gold or silver leaf) to a surface. This art was known to the ancients. According to Herodotus, to Egyptians were accustomed to gilding wood and metals; and gilding by means of gold plates is frequently mentioned in the Old Testament, that will give us a more accurate description of how and of what this TEA SET was made of, now the way it is backstamped and it was professionally monogrammed at some point on each piece "R" are classic common characteristics in many REED & BARTON pieces made in those years. This is a set in a very good to an excellent condition, keeping an original dark heavy patina, mostly inside of the pieces, NO plate loss, NO dents, hinges in a perfect working order with NO reparations, each piece is enhanced in the back, front and footed with characteristic EASTLAKE details as shown in the pictures below, each piece has a rounded shape bowl with a medallion on both sides exquisitely enhanced with a very Shakespearian "A Midsummer Night' read more
