This is a beautiful Victorian fully hallmarked silver Scottish agate axe and shield small kilt pin or brooch. I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found. The stones are classic grey banded agates from Montrose. The pin has a full set of hallmarks with makers ALLd, the anchor for Birmingham assay office, the lion for sterling silver and date letter Z for 1899. The pin is 4.5 cm ( one and three quarter inches ) in length and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original. It has a substantial construction making this a particularly quality piece.
