I've done a bit of research on this strange item, and believe it to be part of a Victorian speaking tube system. There would be tubes attached to the ends of these mouthpieces and they would be put in different rooms of the house or building. This is one mouthpiece with the whistle which fits into the end, and this was removed and blown down the mouthpiece. It's made of wood and there is a brass band round the top of the whistle. There is a ring on the whistle and the mouthpiece, so maybe there was originally a chain to keep them together. The measurements are approx. 2.75" long overall. The whistle is 2.25" long. The mouthpiece is approx. 2" long and 2.25" across the speaking section. It is in good condition. An interesting and unusual item. What would they think of mobile phones!!!!!!!
