WE APPRECIATE SERIOUS BIDDERS ONLY ~ PLEASE ~ NO BIDS ACCEPTED FROM PEOPLE WITH (0) FEEDBACK VICTORIAN WHITBY JET CAMEO MOURNING PIN BROOCH 1870/80's Beautiful lady's face, 1 7/8"x 1 ½" lg cameo An elegant Victorian lady's head adorns this fabulous antique brooch created sometime between 1875-1890 and made from Whitby Jet or other unidentified substance. In the latter portion of Queen Victoria 's reign after the death of her beloved Prince Albert in 1865, mourning jewelry became popular and stylish in England . Victoria wore black clothes and jewelry for the remainder of her life to memorialize her much loved and lost prince, and by doing so, set the stage for this popular jewelry style which took hold of the public by the late 1860's/early 1870's and virtually exploded in the town of Whitby . The town is renowned as the main source of this fabulous material, jet, which is a form of fossilized wood which has further turned to coal. Because it is a relatively soft material, it became the most popular substance for carving mourning jewelry. And also because it was so soft much of that jewelry didn't survive. T have been many substances used to imitate Whitby jet, such as Vulcanite, Gutta Percha, Bog Oak, etc. I am not an expert on jet although I do love it and have collected it and other mourning jewelry made from jet and jet substitutes. Tfore, that being said, this piece might be made from some other substance similar to jet, but it has been extensively tested in every possible manner and in every test comes up positive for Whitby Jet. The pin measures a smidge under 1 7/9" tall by 1 ½" wide. It's in excellent antique condition although does have a teensy rub on the edge nearest to the lady's chin. A bit of the edge design is slightly chipped off. Not really noticeable unless you look closely or under magnification. It's very light weight weighing 14.5 grams.
