Vienna enamel music and jewelry box in the form of a windmill, with moving arms. Made Austria 19th century.7 1/4inches to top of lid. 7 inches accross widest part of base.Widmill consists of hexaonal metal base on ball feet. 4 enameled panels slope towards the raised relief decorated neck. The arms of the windmill, the sides and the lid, on top are all profusely hand enamelled with Watteau / pastoral scenes of courting couples, lazing about and playing music in pastoral settings, surrounded by dogs, sheep and fabulously painted trees and woodlands. The quality of the painting is excellent - one rarely sees work of this standard. The metal neck has delicate loops and medallions with tiny garlands of flowers intersperced between them. Very Georgian in taste and very finely executed. The top comes off to reveal a maroon red velvet lined interior for jewels. While the mechanism to play the music needs a little attention, the enamelling is in excellent condition with no damage of any sort.
