Apparently Vincent Price had an insatiable appetite for these Colima gingerbread figures, because we have found a few more. This one is is a very powerful male figure with a headdress. However his head has been separated from his torso. It is a clean break, and can easily be glued back together. Breakage is common in ancient figures such as these.It measures 8 1/4" in length, 5 1/2" in width, and the head is 2 1/2" thick. Mexico, Colima culture, Late Pre-Classic Period, 300 B.C.E.-300 C.E. Vincent Price began collecting these artifacts in the late 1940s, when he began traveling to Mexico, Central America, and South America. He collected in situ and from prominent dealers such as Stendahl.Because of the breakage, we are offering this powerful figure at a low reserve. The Colima produced "gingerbread style" figurines, which are solid, undecorated pieces with a natural, buff surface. They were made by rolling pieces of clay into coils and pellets, which were connected together with slip. The gingerbread figurines have a cheerful, caricature-like quality. Elongated and thin in profile, they are smaller than hollow sculptures. This figurine has his arms at his sides, but it was more common for Colima figurines to place their hands on their chests.
