This vintage child's rocking horse is from the early 1900's, and maybe earlier. I only have a little history regarding it, because I bought it at an estate auction. I really don't know the origin of it. This is what I do know about it, which is what we were told at the estate auction: I HOPE YOU CAN FOLLOW THIS..This belonged to a Ladies Brother-in -Law, when he was a child, it was given to him by his parants and that was in the early 1900's, but this relative does'nt know the year. She also said she did'nt know if the horse was purchased at that time in the early 1900's and given to their son, or if the horse was actually the Dad's from his early years, which could date the horse to sometime in the 1800"s ?? I don't know the years when all this history happened, but first the father passed away, and the son, who later became her brother in law, kept the horse. Then her Brother in law passed, followed by her sister in law, her husband then got the horse, he passed away, and was followed last by his wife, the Lady for whom this estate auction was held. I'll try to describe the horse best I can, and if you have any questions please ask. First of all it is not the usual flat cut out shape of a horse that you normally find. This horse is more proportion designed, meaning the head, body, legs, and feet, etc. look like that of a carousel horse. The legs are round, the hoofs are shaped like a real horse. It was put together in "layers", being that the head, neck, body and legs have seams w they were joined. Maybe it was hand made, maybe this is the only one like it in existance, I have no idea, although, I've never seen one like it and I'm in my mid 60's. It is missing the ears, which probably were leather pieces? It has some leather pieces of the bridal but that is mostly missing as well. The eyes are drawn with a pencil, which is probably original, because I don't see any marks w it had any other eyes fastened. The mouth is opened, it has nostrill's, and a wooden dowell for handles which goes through the head. It has a soft leather saddle, which has a small tear in the top of it, but I guess it's complete. It has metal stirrups hanging from an old strap material, which runs under the saddle. The horse sets on 2 wooden bows, that are attached to metal brackets, which have a large U shaped bar through them and attached to the 4 corner post. The post are kept apart with 2 pieces of wood that have round heads that come through the 4 post, plus a 3rd piece also with the round ends, in the center of the frame work. All of the wood pieces, the bows, and frame work is in good condition, it is'nt cracked or split, and near as I can see, it was never nailed, I suppose just clued? The frame does have 4 seperate metal corner braces which were nailed to the wood. You can see the seams on the horse w the section pieces were put together, legs, neck, etc. The tail is wood, but that is not an original tail. The relative who brought the horse to the auction said the tail was made out of a piece of wood, to "dress the horse up for the auction", and it really looks good. The tail isn't glued, it is loose, and can be easily taken out. The horse has a small, shallow hole w the original tail was placed, again was it wood, rope, ?? Another good thing for the horse is, it was not cleaned up for the auction when I bought it, and I won't clean it either, so you can clean it the way you want. You will be able to see in my pictures that over the years, it looks like it has had a few coats of paint, which has some peeling. I will take the bolts out of the mounting brackets w the wood bows are attached, and it will make packing the horse a lot more compact. If I can take anything else apart for better packing I will also do so. For instance the horse itself has 2 wood screws holding it to the bow pieces, so I will take them out as well.
