This is a very interesting and odd decorative plate or tray, made to hang on the wall like a picture. It is from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair , The Columbian Exposition. It is made from silver plated brass with a lovely floral and swirl design around the edges. On the reverse it has a patent number 0f 1879, and also says:" Pat. Dec. 27, 1892. On the front in the center, is a photo of the Manufacturers Liberal Arts Building from the Chicago 1893 World's Fair. The very unusual thing about this is that most of all of the photo is engraved on abalone shell. You can see the rainbow color effects in some of the photos. I don't know how this was done, but that is why this must be patented. At the World's fairs, they were always coming up with state of the art things for those times. The picture is under glass. Despite some plating wear to the plate, it is still in very nice condition. I have not seen another like it in my 30+ years in antiques. The plate measures 6+3/4 inches across and up and down. Very heavy for it's size, it will make a unique addition to your collection. Shipping will be $5.99 in the USA and $17.00 Foreign.
