1940's Dr. Seuss Tray Famous NarragansettLager & Ale Steel Serving Tray Chief Gansett says "GANGWAY FOR GANSETT!" its,"TOO GOOD TO MISS!" Theodor Geisel Dr. Seuss, was a college buddy at Dartmouth College with one of the Haffenreffer sons, (owners of the Narrangansett Brewing Co., in Boston.)Rudoft Haffenreffer (the father) had an interest in cigar-store Indians and used this as an opportunity to promote his Narrangansett. When Rudolf Haffenreffer turned his business over to his sons, his son asked his friend Geisel to design a tray.In typical Seuss fashon, he created this humourous design of CHIEF GANSETT This is one of the most popular trays around. This tray was Manufactured by AMERICAN ART WORK, INC. , COSHOCTON, OHIOin the 1940's It is 12" round x 1 1/2"It is nicknamed the DR. SEUSS TRAYI believe that it is made out of steel, it is fairly heavy weighing almost 2 lbs.I have highlighted the worst damage on this tray (photos) which is corrosion around the inside edges of the tray and somepitting on the inside. The design itself is still if fairly good shape with some pitting.T is also a corrosion "ring" on the face of the tray.The back side had a "hanger" stuck to it w someone had hung it on a wall and t is also some pitting on the back. I have been toldthat a lot of this can be cleaned up fairly well however I will leave that read more
