Vintage 1988 WILLIAMSBURG VIRGINIA MetalcraftersROCOCO SCROLL CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTThe Rococo Scroll Christmas Ornament its interpreted from a decorative motif found on a bracket clock in the collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The intricate fretwork-design decorates two small "sound holes", which allow the sound of the bells to be heard through the clock's case. The bracket clock, now on display at the Dewitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery, was made in London around 1740 by John Ellicott, one of the foremost clock and watchmakers of his time. The balanced c-scrolls and piercework of this fluid design are characteristic of the rococo style popular during the mid-eighteenth century. This brass ornament was sandcast and hand polished by the artisans and craftsman of Virginia metalcrafters.
