This pair of vases has been in my family for many years.I took them to an auction house who told me they are a Chinese shape with various foreign influences and the writing around the base means nothing.I was told they are English - Staffordshire pottery and hand enamelled c 1860 - 1880. I cannot verify any of what I was told. The background is black with gold 'handles' and gold trimming around base & top with various colours on the design. Please see the photos. They are the same, never been sure which is back or front (perhaps there isn't!) - I have photographed them so that you can see the design on both 'back & front'. Size approximately : 14cm at it's widest x 21.5cm high x 7cm base depth (round vase bit approx 4cm deep) Condition : I cannot see any cracks or repairs or chips. The gold is a little worn in places but I thinkthis adds to the character and it is to be expected on an item withage. On the base - see the third photograph - is what appears to be 5162. I do not know if this is significent!I shall post them by a delivery firm so that I can use a big box and wrap them well.
