This is a vintage large calabash pipe which measures 7 1/2 inches long, weighs 94 grams and this style of pipe was favoured by the famous Sherlock Holmes. The pipe has a silver collar which shows the British silver hallmarks for Birmingham, the date letter for 1920 together with the initials "BBB" inside a triangle. The initials stand for "Blumfelds Best Briars" or latterly "Britains Best Briars" and was the trademark for one of the leading pipe retailers. Adolph Frankau established his pipe and tobacco firm in London in 1847 and when Louis Blumfeld took over the company in 1856 the initials "BBB" were introduced. This pipe has a slightly domed meerschaum top which measures 2 inches across and a black vulcanite stem and mouthpiece. The condition of this pipe is very good - there are no chips, cracks, dents, damage or repairs to be found but the pipe has been used as is to be expected. For accuracy in my description I will point out that there are some light surface scratches on the stem of the pipe and around the meerschaum rim but nothing that detracts in any way. This vintage calabash Sherlock Holmes style of pipe with 1920 silver "BBB" collar would make an ideal gift or a great addition to any collection.
