Blenko established the humble beginning of The Blenko Glass Company in Kokomo, Indiana. He came to the United States with an ambitious aspiration to become the first U.S. Glass house to produce hand blown antique sheet glass for stained glass windows to rival European glass houses. The first factory closed in 1903 due to the economic down turn in America during that time period. Starting in 1909 he attempted to establish two other factories, but with no success. Eventually, in 1919 after working for other glass factories he found gainful employment with New York's Tiffany's. In 1921 his aspirations to establish himself as America's prominent antique sheet glass maker he moved to Milton, West Virginia. He operated the business as the sole glass blower and salesman in the beginning and this is where he developed the technique of producing a ruby red sheet glass that would not change colors when it was painted and fired.
