!!!***ATTENTION***!!! THIS LISTING WILL BE REMOVED WHEN THE LAST DAY IS REACHED. For this stein the last day is 7/30/08. If you are seriously interested in this stein please make me an offer and I will seriously consider it! This ebay store will close on the last day of July. This is your last chance. Bid, buy or make an offer now or its gone from ebay forever....... Description is as follows: Nice old timer ½ liter heavy thick clear glass stein with 4 tapered ribs situated equidistant around the body and it is 7 inches tall. It is marked on the bottom with an S & G inside a crown âe" possibly for Gille & Sohn. The lid is pewter with a green glass insert that has been hand painted and fired so the paint does not come off. This design is of an edelweiss flower, a hops bud and a head of wheat - all very important in certain brewing recipes. On the front edge a name is engraved in script âe" M. Vogel. The thumblift is plain but well done and both it and the rest of the pewter all have a very nice patina on them. The underside of the pewter lid is also marked with the manufacturers mark âe" G. Hugel. All indications are that this was most likely for a man and came with another stein very similar to this one only more ornate with a blue insert âe" see my other auctions âe" as a pair or set probably owned at one time by a married couple (same name on both) and kept in a local German tavern or Gasthaust as was and still is sometimes the custom in smaller towns or villages. Many locals would leave their uniquely identified steins at a frequently visited local establishment and the barkeeper would safely store their vessel on an open shelf behind the bar or nearby âe" usually upside down with the lid hanging over the edge and facing outward so it could be identified quickly. This was a very popular custom and rightly so as you then had your very own familiar stein to drink from. That being said, this stein has been very much loved and not just left on the shelf as an ornament. It is not cracked or broken anyw but does have wear on the bottom, tiny flakes around the edge of the insert and t is some play in the hinge and strap. And the pewter lid ring does have a few nicks or dings none of which takes away the beauty of this stein. In fact if anything it lends a certain authenticity, character and historical value to it. This is a great stein for any collection and is very well done and substantial or sturdy and still very useable. Buyer to pay within 5 days of auctions end. NO personal checks please. Thanks for your interest. PROSIT!
