ORIGINAL CARVED SCHOONER 'REBECCA' 3D WOOD FOLK ART ON BOARD WITH ORIGINAL PAINTING by JOHN J LOMBARDThis is just a great original piece. One of two original pieces of Cape Cod folk art I acquired from a local estate. I have been unable to find any information about who the artist is. Just very well done pieces. I think they date to around the 1930-1950s. A great combination of carved wood in the form of a ship attached to a wood backing that has a painting on it. Verso is the original label that reads:"Made by John J Lombard of Onset, an old whaler. All hand carved . Scene: Brava, Cape Verde Isle. Type of Vessel: Two masted schooner, used to run passengers to New Bedford. Name of Schooner: Rebecca. Price $120"A really wonderful example of old whaler folk art. The piece measures about 20 1/2 x 29 inches. The carved and painted boat is in excellent condition with what looks like no loss. All the masts and sails still as they were carved as well as the hull. Some surface grime and patina to the white sails but nothing too bad. The background oil painting is just as good. Kind of a modernist view of the island, seas, and clouds. It also shows some minor discoloring from minor surface grime. Some crackling to the paint as well but nothing too bad. Still a wonderful example of American whaler folk art. Original white frame is attached read more
