This auction features a beautiful vintage case with a tin type and an ambrotype. Ambrotype: the "glass Daguerreotype" Period of Use: 1851 - 1880s The ambrotype is a variation of the wet collodion process, and was cheaper than the daguerreotype. The ambrotype was made by slightly underexposing a glass wet plate in the camera. The finished plate produced a negative image that appeared positive when backed with velvet, paper, metal or varnish, making it the 19th century equivalent of the "instant photograph". The tin type (the one on the left) shows a young man. The other picture, an ambrotype also shows a young man this one in uniform, proudly holding his hat. The hat has a number of images on it including: including an F and a bugle. The man has nine buttons on his uniform. His jacket is partially buttoned. T is a buttoned vest under the coat which you can see the bottom part. I have no information on the name of either man. The case measures about 3 inches by 2.5 inches x .75 inches deep. The case (front and back) has beautiful raised decoration. Both sides of the interior of the case have beautiful gold colored embossed matting. Condition: The left side of the case is missing the glass that covers its picture. The left picture has been damaged and is not in good condition.
