I came across this wonderful vintage decorative pottery plate at a recent Estate Sale. I thought the Bald Eagle was pretty special in itself. I'm not a pottery expert so I had to do some research. This plate is from Santa Catalina Island, sometimes called Catalina Island off the Southern California Coast. The words Catalina Island were impressed into the clay. From the information I have read it appears that the pottery was only made on the Island from 1927 through 1937. It is also signed on the back 65 B Head Bald Eagle S.J.W. I was unable to find any information about the artist. T is also a 250 which I did not try to remove. I don't know if t is a purpose behind the number or not. The plate measures 10 ½" in diameter. Between 1947 and 1961 DDT was dumped into the ocean and the fish became contaminated. The contamination from this chemical dumping devastated the Bald Eagle population on Catalina. Now, thanks to the Bald Eagle Restoration Projects, Bald Eagles are regularly seen again on Santa Catalina including nesting pairs. This would make a great gift for someone who has worked on that Project. In doing the research I came across a wonderful Live Cam of a nesting Eagle. That was worth all the time spent on looking for this plate, I hope you will find it as well. The plate is in excellent condition, no chips or cracks just read more
