antique original Bakelite vintage ash tray from the 1940s - from the famous new york city night club THE COPACABANA this is an original black Bakelite { not plastic } ash try in very good to excellent condition not a later day reproduction ! marked on the bottom QUALITY EAGLE MADE U.S.A. guaranteed original ! probably taken home as a souvenir, from a concert featuring one of the famous headliners like Frank Sinatra who sang there in the 40's or 50's The copacabana opened just before the start of world war two at 10 East 60th Street in New York City. started by a man named Monte Proser , but he was soon pushed aside by mob boss Frank Costello. the club originally had a strict "no blacks" policy. In 1944 Harry Belafonte was banned from the Copacabana. He was in the U.S. Navy at the time, and was denied entry with a date. Eventually the club changed its policy, and Belafonte returned in the 1950s as a headliner at the club. Sam Cooke performed there on July 8, 1964, resulting in the LP Sam Cooke at the Copa, Sammy Davis Jr. shattered attendance records with his run in May 1964, and in 1965 The Supremes made their debut there in July, resulting in Motown Records booking The Temptations, Martha and the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye in the next few years Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were frequent performers at the club, and did their read more
