This is an old, antique, vintage, baby's 100% cotton crib or cradle quilt 35 ½" wide X 44" long. dating from the 1880's although some fabrics may be earlier but I don't think any are later. It is a four patch pattern made with four 1 ½" wide squares with sashing of a little over 1 ½" wide between the 3 inch blocks. T are 63 blocks in all. Quilt is entirely hand pieced with tiny quilt (running) stitches. This is a very early example of a crib quilt, quite rare and hard to come by. Crib quilts of this era were made to duplicate in miniature size adult sized bed quilts. The batting is cotton with seeds, the kind that had been spread out in pieces over the backing before the top was laid over it. This quilt is tied generously at every seam intersection to keep the batting in place when washing. Backing is of the same fabric as the sashing and has been narrowly turned to the front and stitched in place with tiny blind hem stitches. Condition : This quilt is in very good condition for a quilt of this type and age. The edges are fraying in places along the two long edges. Four of the 1 ½" blocks have disintegrated. T are 51, 3 inch blocks that are intact, the rest have splitting in one or two squares some showing only under close inspection. Amazingly the back and sashing have no holes, tears or splits. T is some, to be expected, light read more
