Not real sure if this is atoy or class room demonstration device or what but IT WORKS. Turning the hand crank spins a stepup gear on the coil shaft to produce a current in both the leads. The metal trumpet shaped caps (not threaded) look like they would fit early spark plugs? The horseshoe shape frame is cast iron. The only marks are on the nickel plated caps which are each marked “PAT. PEND.” A very old taped spice in one of the lead wires, a couple of small paint flakes on inside of red frame. Overall fine vintage condition. Wood base approx 3” X 4”; just under 4” at maximum height. been advised that this is a "shocking" novelty toy; the silver colored ends are "handles". They were held in the hands while another person cranked the toy which produced the shock.
