This violin is a bit of an enigma. The instrument is clearly handmade, but nobody knows by whom, when, or w My grandfather found it in his attic, after which it was owned and played by my mother for a while. She recently took the instrument to a professional violin-maker close to her home in Vermont. He assessed the violin to have been made around or before the American Civil War because of the distinctive lion's head scroll on the headstock. At this time the tail piece, bridge and strings of the instrument were replaced. The violin is in good structural condition with no cracks in any of its surfaces. However, t is a small chip, visible in the photos, in the edge trim along the top-right of the body, and, as one would expect from an instrument of its age, the finish is wearing thin in some places. If you are a collector or restorer of historical or vintage musical instruments, this could be a rare treasure. Included is a hard-shell violin case, which is nothing special, but at least it will protect the instrument during shipping. The winning bidder will pay the actual cost of shipping to his or her address.
