You are bidding on a handwritten Diary from 1868 kept by 21 year-old law clerk Joseph Sawyer. He clerked for Judge Charles Crawford of Oakland County, Michigan. This diary is a wonderful depiction of law in the years just after the Civil War. Joseph left his home in Cambridge City, Indiana for this position in Michigan just after his 21st birthday. He writes of taking testimony & briefs, riding the railroad, church, his finances (complains of being broke), the weather, County Fairs, friends, farm life, etc. March 19 - "Henry Vincent lecture on 'The Friends and Enemies of America in England During the Rebellion' - a splendid lecture!" April 6 - "ELECTION - first vote cast for the new constitution - equal rights." July 15 - "Judge at Detroit attending the Democractic State Convention." The diary has entries on well over 220 days.
