VINTAGE HARDANGER LINEN RUNNER FROM NORWAY

THIS NORWEGIAN LINEN RUNNER CAME FROM AN ANTIQUE FARM NEAR TRONDHEIM. THE FAMILY OF THIS FARM HAD LIVED MANY GENERATIONS IN THE SAME HOUSE AND THEIR DINING ROOM CABINETS HAD ACCUMULATED MANY ANTIQUE SETS OF NORWEGIAN CHINA AND LINENS. THIS PIECE IS APPROXIMATELY 35 YEARS OLD, IS ALL HAND DONE IN A PRETTY LILAC BLUE. THE SIZE WOULD ALSO WORK WELL FOR A CHILD'S BUNAD. I HAVE TWO BUNAD PATTERNS LISTED. IT IS 14 3/4" LONG AND 19 3/4" AT THE BOTTOM. IT HAS LOVELY HARDANGER WORK NEAR THE HEM AND IS IN MINT CONDITION. I ALSO HAVE ANOTHER ITEM LISTED FROM THIS SAME FARM.

THE THEME FOR MY AUCTIONS THIS WEEK IS BEAUTIFUL SCANDINAVIA. I HAVE ITEMS LISTED FROM SWEDEN, DENMARK, NORWAY AND FINLAND. (immigrant trunk, antique solje, orrefors, arabia, iittala, holmegaard, royal copenhagen, bing & grondahl, rorstrand, flint, hardanger, ege dolls, ronnaug petterssen dolls, bunad, flax knife, rosemaling, and carving). THE PICTURES SHOWN ARE OF HORSES IN SWEDEN.

EXCERPT FROM LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN BY PAUL DU CHAILLU ANNO 1882 (ALSO IN MY AUCTION) " ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE INSTITUTIONS IN BERGEN IS THE FREE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL, W POOR GIRLS ARE TAUGHT THE ARTS OF FEMALE INDUSTRY...I ENTERED A LARGE ROOM W THE PRINCIPAL, AND ELDERLY LADY OF BENIGNANT COUNTENANCE, RECEIVED ME WITH GREAT COURTESY. UPON A LARGE TABLE LAY BOUQUETS OF FLOWERS, WHICH GAVE A CHEERFUL APPEARANCE TO THE PLACE, AND WERE INTENDED TO IMPART TO THE SCHOLARS A TASTE..SCHOLARS RANGED FROM SEVEN TO SIXTEEN YEARS. ALL WERE WORKING TOGETHER IN GROUPS OR CLASSES, ACCORDING TO THEIR PROFICIENCY-MAKING DRESSES AND SHIRTS, HEMMING, STITCHING, KNITTING, MENDING, AND DARNING-UNDER THE CARE OF FAITHFUL AND COMPETENT TEACHERS. T WAS SOME WONDERFUL SKILL IN THE DARNING OF TABLE-CLOTHS, THE WORK BEING SO NEATLY DONE THAT ONE COULD HARDLY DISTINGUISH THE PLACE WHICH HAD BEEN MENDED..."
