Vintage Henry VIII Marie Rose Ship's Bell pewter thimble. The Marie Rose was a carrack-type warship in the 16th century and the flagship of King Henry VIII. After serving for 33 years in several wars against the French and Scotland she saw her last naval action on 19th July 1545. The ship sank in the Solent waters (South Coast of England) during a storm and heavy seas whilst leading the attack on the galleys of the French invasion. The Marie Rose was rediscovered in 1971 and salvaged in 1982. It was one of the most complex and expensive projects in the history of maritime archaeology. The surviving section of the ship and thousands of recovered artefacts including weapons, sailing equipment, naval supplies and a wide array of items used by the crew are of immense value as a Tudor era navy time-capsule. Since the mid-1980s the Marie Rose remains have been on display at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard attracting many thousands of visitors every year. This lovely pewter thimble of the Marie Rose ship's bell is definitely not a modern piece and has obvious age to it.
