" ENGINEERING DIRECTOR" are you one? ctob er 2008. Demolition work started in April 2009. These signs all come from the 1920's Tram sheds in Barnsley - home of the Barnsley & District Electric Omnibus company that eventually grew into Yorkshire Traction Bus Co. The site is now demolished for housing. The site itself - even now couldn't be better placed for a bus depot - but the new owners 'Stagecoach' are not only a Transport company - they are 'asset strippers' They bought the place to demolish and turn a profit at a huge cost to others in Heritage and employment. Poor Stagecoach! they themselves grow bigger and sooner or later will get noticed and swallowed up - probably by a foreign company. Where's the sense? The society we have created (by the very neglect of it) is now driven by greed not sense - that's why some absolute morons get rich! There are far too many 'mini Hitler's' - the megalomaniac types trying to live forever, bright driven, charismatic and deluded! Vintage? - well they are 1970/80's - Old? approx 35-40 years old. Not old in the 'big scheme of things' but that's not the point. For me, the point is knowing where things are from and imagining the people and the places and coming to an understanding of how important continuity and industry is. It has shown me over the years, in great clarity, why our society has changed for the worse and how it could be easily be got back on track. For all our technology we continue letting ourselves be blown around aimlessly - people say 'its progress' fatalistic rubbish! Progress is not progress - unless it's in the right direction! And besides when I say 'aimlessly' I mean that's the perception most people have - in fact they are being cynically manipulated by those 'nationless' basta #ds that control almost all the worlds wealth by the control of money and markets. Free Market forces? Get real! The markets are milking machines and we are the doe eyed cows. So, for me, it is a knowledge based nostalgia that does have a point. So if you are one of those 'Anorak' types that just collect stuff and keep swapping and changing to get the best condition items, with no thought whatsoever of history, origin and people . Go Away! (Have you ever spoke to them? They drone and mumble in a way that makes life not worth the effort)! History The Yorkshire Traction Company Limited was formed in 1902 as the Barnsley & District Electric Traction Company Limited . It operated trams around the Barnsley locality until around 1930. In 1928, prior to the trams being withdrawn, the company was renamed from the Barnsley & District Traction Company Limited (the 'electric' part of the name being dropped some years earlier). The company was affectionately referred to as 'Tracky'. Yorkshire Traction was sold by the Government in 1986 to a management team led by Frank Carter. Until selling the business to Stagecoach on 14 December 2005, Carter expanded the business by purchasing other operators including: Barnsley & District (formed in July 1990 when Traction bought the bus business of Tom Jowitt Travel of Tankersley), Lincolnshire RoadCar Company , Lincoln City Transport , Yorkshire Terrier , Andrews (Sheffield) Ltd (merged with Yorkshire Terrier in 1998), "Sheffield Omnibus (Merged with Andrews (Sheffield) in 1996), South Riding (merged with Andrews (Sheffield) in 1995), Strathtay Scottish , Meffans Coaches (a subsidiary of Strathtay), London Traveller (35% owned by Traction, sold in 2002), Yorkshire Traction and its subsidiaries were owned by The Traction Group, which was owned by Frank Carter, together with small shares owned by the Carter Family Trust and employees who worked for the company at privatisation. In December 2005 Stagecoach acquired Yorkshire Traction, at the time the largest privately owned bus operator in the United Kingdom.
