ORIGINAL JOSEPH NEWMAN (1890-1979) 'GLOUCESTER DOCK WORKERS' OIL PAINTING THIS IS A REALLY GREAT PIECE. JOSEPH NEWMAN IS AN IMPORTANT AMERICAN IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERNIST ARTIST OF THE 20TH CENTURY. FOR THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE ARTIST, HIS BIOGRAPHY FROM ASKART READS: Joseph Newman was born in New York City in 1890. He attended the Pratt Institute and the Adelphi College Art School, and served in the U.S. Army during WWW1. After the war, he married and traveled to Europe. He returned to New York in the mid 1920's, and with a group of contemporaries formed The Fifteen Gallery in Manhattan. Newman painted a broad variety of subjects including genre scenes, landscapes, figurative works, and equestrian subjects. He worked in various styles ranging from academic realism to a looser, post-impressionist approach, and is best known for colorful, animated genre scenes painted in and around Rockport Harbor and as far west as Taos, New Mexico. He exhibited frequently at the Brooklyn Museum, The National Academy, The Carnegie Institute, The Whitney and The Society of Independent Artists. He was a member of the L.C. Tiffany Foundation, The Salmagundi Club, Rockport Art Association, and the American Watercolor Society. His work is represented in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, The Newark Museum, the Boston Library, and the Library of Congress. Newman was the recipient of many awards throughout his career. He died in September, 1979 in Flushing, New York. A FEW YEARS AGO, THE ARTIST'S DAUGHTER BEGAN SELLING OFF SOME OF HER FATHER'S WORK. SOME CAME TO AUCTIONS AND OTHERS WENT OUT TO DEALERS. I RECENTLY ACQUIRED A SMALL COLLECTION OF THE WORKS FROM A FELLOW DEALER WHO BOUGHT THEM FROM THE DAUGHTER. SOME ARE SIGNED AND OTHERS ARE NOT BUT THEY ARE ALL GUARANTEED TO BE 100% AUTHENTIC ORIGINAL JOSEPH NEWMAN PAINTINGS. THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES OF ALL THE WORK I ACQUIRED. A GREAT MODERNIST SCENE OF SOME OLD DOCK WORKERS AND OTHERS WORKING AT THE HARBOR. OIL ON CANVASBOARD MEASURING 16 X 20 INCHES. SIGNED LOWER RIGHT CORNER. PAINTING IS CLEAN WITH JUST A FEW NICKS IN THE WORK ALONG THE LOWER LEFT BOTTOM CORNER. THE COLORS ARE STRONG AND THE THICK PAINT THE ARTIST USED IN THE UPPER CORNER IS STILL STRONG AND HEAVY.
