UP FOR AUCTION : Is a Large Vintage Basket from Bechuanaland present-day Botswana in South Africa.....Bechuanaland was a protectorate of Great Britain established in 1885 and became a Republic of Botswana in 1966.... This basket is very similar to those made by the Zulu of South Africa...The Art of making baskets in Botswana (Bechuanaland) has been known for generations and still alive today and even more diverified in terms od style, size and decoration. This Stunning Basket is made from Palm Tree Fibers....The Technique and process of making is very complex....It can take up to a month to produce a Medium Size Basket Every Basket is made by Hand, using idigenous Raw Materials, Manily Fibers from Local Palm Trees, Reeds or Straw that are used to ensure the Strength of the Basket....Dyes are obtaines using roots and Barks of Local Trees and Special leaves.... Designs are Taken Basically from Traditional Repertoire.... I Have A Modest Collection of Africa Baskets and will be offering up for Auction from time..to..time The Basket is 18 3/4" dia. on top...6" tall...the bottom base of the basket is 5" across This large basket has signs of useage it has been used in Botswana..... but no holes, minor wear and minor tears but clean one of my first african basket Great workmenship......
