DescriptionFor your consideration is a vintage silver and gold toned wings brooch made by Barclay. There are no marks indicating the purity of the metal. The back of the brooch is engraved 'Barclay'. The brooch is secured with a rollover or locking 'C' clasp. This piece dates to the early 1940s.A similar brooch is pictured on pages 62 & 63 in Brunialti's " A Tribute to America Jewelry" and in Brunialti's "American Costume Jewelry Art & Industry" on page 244. There was also an advertisement for it in Mademoiselle Magazine , September 1941, as a "McClelland Barclay" piece, and it was made in more than one size.McCLELLAND BARCLAY was both an illustrator and a designer. Born in 1891, he painted and made sculptural utilitarian pieces and decorative objects for the home, as well as wonderful jewelry. His design sense was magnificent, and both his sterling and his rhinestone jewelry is well known and collected. Sadly he died in World War II.by Rice-Weiner gold and silver tone wings brooch, circa 1941.
