Vintage Meerschaum Turk's Head Estate Pipe This pipe as well as many others will be coming to you from an overly faithful and loyal customer of “Boswell’s Pipe & Tobacco”, for many years. This customer took exceptional pride in his vast collection! These pipes were all case kept, unless of course they were being enjoyed. Not to mention they were regularly cleaned and groomed by none other than J.M. Boswell himself. (All of the pipes coming from this incredible customer will have this paragraph starting the description. They will also contain the year when they were purchased). Thank you! Great Persian and detail in this Meerschaum Oil and Heat Colored on the whole Meerschaum Does have some dings, looks to have been a favorite Line of cake in the bowl Original Bake lite stem does show signs of chatter This pipe was originally purchased in1969 from a Shop in Pittsburg PA Customer states that the thread might be bone thread if so it is Turkish made (however I am not sure) Be sure to expand the pictures to see the full detail of this unique pipe Little bit of information on Meerschaum : Meerschaum has occasionally been used as a substitute for soapstone , fuller's earth , and as a building material; but its chief use is for smoking pipes and cigarette holders . The first recorded use of meerschaum for making pipes was around 1723 and quickly became prized as the perfect material for providing a cool, dry, flavorful smoke. The porous nature of meerschaum draws moisture and tobacco tar into the stone. Meerschaum became a premium substitute for the clay pipes of the day and remains prized to this day, though briar pipes have become the most common pipes starting in the mid 1800s. When smoked, meerschaum pipes gradually change color, and old meerschaums will turn incremental shades of yellow, orange, red, and amber from the base on up. When prepared for use as a pipe, the natural nodules are first scraped to remove the red earthy matrix, then dried, again scraped and polished with wax. The crudely shaped masses thus prepared are turned and carved, smoothed with glass-paper , heated in wax or stearine , and finally polished with bone-ash , etc. Nomenclature: Has Leaf on shank Approx. Note: Estate pipes are pre-owned and pre-smoked, some may show wear. Which would be bite marks on the mouthpiece, cake along the inside of the bowl, scratches and also some show fills.
