Up for auction is a nice medium sized vintage hand-crafted Nantucket basket purse. This purse features a bentwood swing handle with ivory-colored pins, the customary hardwood starts, and a carefully crafted wrapped bentwood rim. And be sure to notice the wrapped hinges in back and the front lock, exactly like the Nantuckets of old. The weaver used narrow splints and ribs, and this basket is symmetrical and nicely woven. It comes with a detailed carving in the center of the lid in the shape of a whale. The basket is lined in a dark brown print. The basket is not signed, and I'm sure it is a high-quality reproduction, rather than actually made on Nantucket Island. This attractive Nantucket basket purse makes a beautiful piece for display or could still be used for its original purpose.The basket, as noted, is of a nice medium size, perfect for use or display, measuring an oval 8" x 6Â½" across at the rim and 6Â½" deep - about 12" to the top of the handle when it is raised. Very pleasing proportions! This beautiful basket is in pristine condition, with no breaks or any damage whatever. The little hinges and locking mechanism are intact and still work.
