This Vintage 830 Silver SOLJE, made by IVAR T. HOLTH of OSLO, NORWAY, is an absolute stunner. Instead of the usual sedate assortment of drops attached directly to the pin, this brooch has three free-swinging cascades of exquisite silver heart-shaped filigree accented by applied, tiny balls of silver, with gleaming gold drops ("spoons") completing the display. Two of the cascades have four tiers, and the center piece has five. Please see the close-ups, below, showing the terrific details. When I researched solje, I found this: "All soljes use a variety of dangles to ward off 'Evil Spirits' and keepyou safe from harm. Soljes were given for a variety of occasions. . . . Larger soljes were always a bridal tradition, with a bride receiving afamily solje that she would add a new tier of filigree to, to symbolize a new generation." This one has enough dangles to ward off a lifetime's worth of evil spirits, and I gather that the crown on top is the traditional bridal crown. I wish t were some way that a static photograph could convey the graceful motion and drape of this piece. The overall length, down the middle, is 5 1/4"; the pin alone is 2 3/16" x 1 3/8" across at its widest point. The three cascades are about 2" across. The triple-heart filigree pieces are about 9/16" wide, and the spoons are just shy of 3/8" long and 3/16" across at read more
