Up for auction is a very cool looking and very lightly hollow carved Bluebill Drake decoy from the St. Clair Flats area, ca.1930. We believe is was carved by a member of the Sears family (Bernum or George), native American Indians who hunted for much of their lives on and around Harsen's Island and Algonac. The family originally settled around 1840 on a spit of land called it Sears Island, which was a peninsula separating the Middle Channel from Little and Big MuscamootBays. This The paint on this decoy appears to be original but may have been taken down to the original at some point from some overpainted state, as suggested by the lack of texture and sheen to the paint. The decoy is excellent structurally with a wonderful, perky form to the head and an uplifted tail. There are minor rubs to the top of the head, bill and tail. Minor paint flaking on the body. Very old original glass eyes and nicely detailed bill carving. There is a 1" hole in the bottom of this decoy that looks old and was probably drilled to provide access to the screw that holds the head on the body. The hole is big enough to provide a good view of the chip carving used to hollow out this old bird. Measures 13-1/2" long; 7" wide; and 6-1/2" tall. Shipping includes insurance and is higher to Canada. Thanks for looking.
