This auction is for the ORIGINAL, VINTAGE 5x8-INCH DOUBLEWEIGHT GELATIN SILVER PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT of physique model and professional wrestler BILL PASK shot and marketed by the seminal East Coast physique photographer EARLE FORBES . This is a very rare image by one of the underrepresented physique photographers of the past century, noteworthy not only because it is DATED JULY 30, 1939 verso (as shown in one of my scans), but in particular because it was SIGNED by the photographer (also as shown in one of my scans). I included a portfolio of Forbes' work in my recent book UNCOVERED: RARE VINTAGE MALE NUDES (Rizzoli/Universe, 2009). In his earlier career as a dancer with the Ted Shawn all-male troupe, Forbes cultivated a sensibility for composition and a flair for the theatrical that served him well in his subsequent career as a photographer. He suffered slights and indignities during his lifetime -- he was jeered for his use of a common box camera for his portraits and figure studies -- and even today, long after his death, even knowledgeable dealers who've seen his credit stamp (and therefore know better) continually misspell his name.
