As an active jazz player, I put this drum set together to use with a big band as well as bebop combos. My requirements were that it look great, sound even better, and be reliable with solid hardware. In other words, a real player with vintage sound but modern amenities. My first drumset (which I still have) was a Slingerland, so that was sort of a given. These sizes fit my requirements as the 12/14/20 combination is perfect for bebop, and adding the 16" floor tom gives a classic Buddy Rich configuration for big band with the 14" and 16" floor toms giving a better spread than the old double 16" pairing. Since such a size combination was not sold as a set, I had to put this one together as singles. Singles would not match in color, so I chose to find cosmetically challenged drums and do a re-wrap, adding a modern Yamaha tom holder for its reliability and adjustability. I was unable to find a 14x14 floor tom at the time so I put together a Keller shell clone with reinforcing rings, Slingerland bearing edge profile, and vintage Slingerland hardware. The Slingerland shells are 3-ply with the inner ply being maple re-wrapped with the same WMP wrap purchased at one time. Old wrap was removed, the shells thoroughly sanded, any extraneous holes filled and the new wrap secured with WilsonArt H2O contact adhesive. All seams are still tight
