The lights work better with clips. They will light but don't bubble if pointed down. All nine has the little glass slug that the early bubble lights had. Slugs also make for finer bubbles and some say add to the bubble sound. This string still has the little yellow paper tag still attached that says on one side: Xmas & Decorative Lighting Unit 120 Volts , the UL symbol , and NOMA . The other side says Made in U.S.A. , Plant C , For Indoor Use Only , String No. G . I'm not sure but I believe the sockets are made out of bakelite. The plug in has slots on the back of it w another string could be connected. A bit of history: Carl Otis who was an accountant at Montgomery Ward "invented" the bubbling light in 1938 and in that same year he sold the rights to NOMA but the Company was unable to market them in any quantity until after the war in 1946.
