This war time smoother is completely original, all the finishes. Everything was plenty nice enough to let it be. Not only the japanning is original but also the stain on the wood. I did completely disassemble the plane and clean everything very thoroughly. It not only looks terrific but functions perfectly as well. Appears to have factory grind on the cutter. This is a nice Type 17 No. 5.We know this type plane is desirable for the thick sole casting which this one has in spades. We also know they came with and without certain features, seemingly random. But this one is fully loaded with every feature Stanley ever offered. Like all WWII Stanley planes this one has a steel insert in the hard rubber adjusting nut. The knob is unlike the others I've seen. The knob and tote are damage free with one piece steel screws holding them in place. The frog is unusual with no adjusting screw. It has the correct kidney shaped hole in the lever cap. No rust no pitting. As you can see in the large gallery pictures this plane is in nice shape and will definitely put out some good work for you. You should note that the cutting edge looks original to me but you may want to make a few passes on your stone before using. I don't sharpen cutters. Please examine all the photos to see exactly what you can expect to receive and let me know if you have any questions. read more
