Margarete Steiff, a woman handicapped by polio as a baby went on to become one of the most important names in plush animals and one of the first handicapped women to become a successful businesswoman. She founded a small clothing factory in her parent's home in 1873 and ingeniously produced a few elephant pincushions in the winter of 1880 as Christmas presents. Her small animals became sought after by German collectors and due to demand, she moved her clothing factory out of her parent's home and into a factory suited to her needs. On a whim of her nephew's in 1902, her company created 3,000 teddy bears with mohair fur and jointed arms and legs and sold them all to an American at a Leipzig trade fair. Shortly thereafter the original bear became a hit at the St. Louis World Fair and her company increased in size geometrically. Tragically, Margarete died at the early age of 61, but her nephews kept the company running and it is still thriving today.
