Mathlessantiques is offering collectors this vintage Blacksmith Top Swage Hammer. Here's an old top swage that still has plenty of life left in it. The handle is not perfect, but is tight. This is a NO RESERVE auction. NOTE : This auction is for the TOP SWAGE ONLY, blacksmith anvil IS NOT included. A set hammer is a top tool used to smooth and flatten hot metal. It works like a flatter but the set hammer is normally uniform from top to bottom and is therefore much stronger and heavier than a flatter of comparable size. It can be useful for squaring up the inside of a bend or against a shoulder. The set hammer is placed on the workpiece and stuck with a hand hammer or sledge rather than being used as a hammer as the name implies. The common set hammer has sharp square edges. Sizes generally ranged from 3/4" to 3" square. The most common size is 1 1/2" to 2". The measurements are: overall length 17", head 2" x 4", weight is just over 3 lb. Lower 48 states s/h/i is $8.00
